”Conquer the Cold”

Festival organisers announced today that the charity component of the Ballito Prawn and Jazz festival will kick off with the first aspect of the festivals charity program, the collection of  blankets to benefit those in need over our cold winter months.

In conjunction with Rotary International, the festival will raise funds for earmarked community based projects.  A specific local project or charity will be identified each year which the festival will support. Furthermore, a percentage of the festivals proceeds will be donated to the newly formed Community Chest to assist existing local projects in our community. The beneficiary charity for the 2010 Festival is the Courier Orphan Fund.

The event taking place at the Collisheen Estate from the 2-4th July, is a true family affair with a great selection of scrumptious and healthy gourmet prawn dishes available, wonderful entertaining live jazz bands, outdoor sports activities, an organic market, a craft market, celebrity cook-off and a 5000 sqm kids carnival area.

The festival has a strong charity focus, and our aim is to make a measurable difference in our community and we believe the “Conquer the Cold” blanket drive will make a huge difference in the lives of many in the community who suffer in these cold winter months said the organisers.

With autumn fast turning to winter many needy are feeling the chill in the air already. As many in our local communities have no access to electricity, hot running water or gas heaters – it's almost impossible to keep warm in their homes. Your gift of a blanket will bring warmth and comfort to many who have so little.

The blanket drive is open to both the public as well as the business community, and participants can bring new blankets to the Courier offices as well as the Lifestyle SPAR lottery kiosk.

Aranda Textiles Isithebe has kindly donated 100 blankets to begin the “Conquer the Cold” campaign and Leanne and Nikki would both like to encourage all other local business to be part of the challenge. Each week the North Coast Courier will keep you inform of the progress as well as the challenges that have been set. Those businesses who would like to make a donation and set a challenge can contact the festival office on info@ballitoprawnfestival.co.za.

This is just one aspect where the Ballito Prawn festival hopes to make a difference in the lives of our local communities, the event organisers will also be collecting food parcels to donate from corporate companies who have agreed to participate in making a difference this winter.

The winter blanket drive will run until Sunday the 04th July 2010.
